The Hannah Story
Hannah is an enthusiastic girl that found herself in the middle of misfortune and would not let the misfortune be on her way to pursue her goal through academic training. She is a victim of the inhumane condition that most Nigerians found themselves because leaders do not care for the masses. Hannah’s story is a touchy one that will make you cry, I did myself when I heard her story from her dad, the only surviving family member of Hannah.
It was in 2017 when her mother bought kerosene to put in a stove to make dinner for the family of 5, not knowing that it was an adulterated kerosene that is mixed with condensate or gasoline. As the mother emptied the content into the stove and lit it, the next thing was boom, explosion, that killed Hannah’s mother, brother, months old sister leaving Hannah half dead. It was the help of good Samaritans that came to their aid that saved Hannah’s life. She spent months in the hospital having suffered 3rd degree burns on her legs and other parts of her body. Nobody could believe that Hannah could walk again, but today she is standing on her feet. The scars of her burns remain fresh.
Hannah’s passion for school:
Hannah just completed her elementary school, and she is now in Junior secondary school (middle school). She is so enthusiastic to pursue her academic goal that she went to the bush to pick snails to sell so that she could buy socks that she will wear to cover her burns even when her dad says let them use the snail to cook, Hannah refused says it is better that she forgoes the meat in her food but to go to school because the future holds better – This is the crux of Hannah’s story. Hannah wants to be educated and become a graduate to fend for herself and her only surviving relative – her father but the finances to enable Hannah to achieve this aim is not there. Hannah is a courageous, smart, enthusiastic girl, with strong desire to go to school irrespective of her disability from the fire incident that rendered her foot burnt which impacted her walking, she goes to the bush, combed it, and raked the bush with her bare hands searching for snails to pick for her to sell to buy school supplies, not minding she could be bitten by snake or other venomous animals hiding under dead/dry leaves, what a courageous girl she is just to see that she goes to school.
For Hannah to go to junior secondary school, she needs to trek (walk) 4 miles from her father’s house, remember Hannah’s burn on her feet has caused a form of disability as she cannot walk that distance to make it to school every day.
Our commitment:
We promised Hannah that she will go to school whatever be the case. We are looking at providing accommodation for Hannah near the school, provide her with all the necessities that will make it easy for her to go to school. This is going to be a 6-year project.
